Renaud Lavillenie (France) set a new World record for the Pole Vault in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Saturday with Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC) beating the rest of a top class field.
Lavillenie, the Olympic Champion, cleared 6.16 at his first attempt to add a centimetre to Sergy Bubka’s mark set at the same venue twenty years ago.
Cutts cleared 5.81 to show that his recent UK record of 5.83 was far from being a “one off”. He also had a decent attempt at 5.96 and is now established as a world class competitor in the vault.
* Lee Emanuel (City of Sheffield) was seventh in the 3000 metres won by Hagos Gebrhtiwel (Ethiopia) in 7:35.73 at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday.
In a high class race, two other Ethiopians and a trio of Kenyans were ahead of Emanuel whose time of 7:45.12 was a personal best.
Not only that but it was a qualifying mark for next month’s World Indoor Championships in Poland. However, the Sheffield runner has already booked his place in the 1500 metres following his win in the trials last weekend.
Another Sheffield trial winner, Mukhtar Mohammed (Sheffield RC) was seventh in the 800 metres in 1:48.86 but he already has the qualifying mark for the World Championships.
