Several South Yorkshire athletes compete in the UK Championships at Birmingham starting today and continuing over the weekend. The meeting is the trial for the World Championships in Moscow next month.
Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC/City of Sheffield)) will be looking for victory in the pole vault following an outstanding performance in last week’s British League match at Don Valley where he set an outdoor best of 5.61. That heads the UK outdoor rankings this year although Steve Lewis has jumped higher indoors.
As well as an intriguing head to head for these two, keen interest will centre on the height achieved. The A standard for Moscow is 5.70 and that would almost certainly mean selection. In last week’s event, Cutts got close to that height.
City of Sheffield runner Lee Emanuel has a chance of success in the 1500m, Based in New Mexico, Emanuel always comes back for the trials and has rarely reproduced his form in the USA. This time, however, he has run a personal best of 3:36.55 in Belgium last weekend and this puts him second in this season’s British rankings. The event is at a low ebb in this country and Emanuel can win. However, the A standard for Moscow selection is a tough 3:35.
Mukhtar Mohammed (Sheffield RC) is a contender in the 800m, ranking third in the country this year but his last outing, at Birmingham two weeks ago, was disappointing. The target time for the distance is 1:45.30 which is within Mohammed’s compass at his best.
City of Sheffield duo Lee Doran and Joe Dunderdale are one and two in the javelin rankings and are both in line for medals but even the B standard for the World Championships is an awesome 81 metres.Sheffield based Louise Bloor contests the sprints. On last week’s form, when she ran personal bests in the 100 and 200m, she could make the finals.
