When she was in middle school, Amy Dennis was thinking about what events she would like to do for track.

Dennis’ mom told her an older relative had once done pole vault, so she decided to give it a try. Back in present day, Amy is prepping for her college career — in the pole vault.

Last spring, Dennis signed a letter of intent to pole vault for Johnson County Community College, and she will join fellow graduate Nate O’Brien on the track team this season. It was something she didn’t expect to happen.

“To be honest, I really didn’t think about pole vaulting in college,” Dennis said. “Nate had already signed with Johnson County, and they asked him if he knew of any other vaulters, and he told them about me. So they came down to a meet, and they offered me (a scholarship). It was pretty exciting.”

The Frontier League meet was a good one for the coaches to come down and watch as Dennis won the league title in the pole vault and medaled in the 100-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay.

At the beginning of last season, Dennis set a personal best in her first meet as she cleared 10 feet, and she would do that one other time. At state, Dennis finished in a three-way tie for fifth to earn her first state medal.

Dennis started her college career this week, but the coaches have already started giving her advice on what to improve on.

“Speed is a big thing they have told me to work on along with some technique,” Dennis said. “They want me to try new things and maybe work with different poles, so I have stuff to work on, but I am looking forward to that.”

Along with focusing on the pole vault, Dennis is also working toward her degree. She is majoring in elementary education and hopes to move on to a bigger school, not only in her degree, but in the pole vault as well.

“I would love to go to a bigger program, like Division II or even Division I, and hopefully I can work hard enough to get there,” she said. “Right now, though, I hope to do well at Johnson County.”
