Derby athletes make their mark at Junior Olympics

Two Derby athletes recently competed in the USATF National Junior Olympics Track & Field Championship in Greensboro, N.C., after placing highly in regional competition earlier this summer.

Alyssa Wheeler, who wrapped up her eighth grade year at St. Mary Parish School this spring, placed fifth in nationals in late July and second in the regional competition in June in the girls 13-14 age group.

Wheeler, who will be a freshman at Kapaun Mount Carmel this fall, vaulted a personal-best 10 feet, six inches in national competition, after vaulting 10 feet in regionals. The 14-year-old has been pole vaulting for two years.

Christian Compton, an incoming sophomore at Derby High School, vaulted a personal-best 13 feet for first place in regionals in the boys 15-16 age division. He followed with 31st place at the National Junior Olympics.

Compton also placed fifth in pole vault at nationals and first in regionals in 2012.

He also qualified for the Class 6A state track meet in pole vault as a freshman, and set the Wichita Diocese Catholic Schools Activity League record as an eighth grader at St. Mary Parish School, with a vault of 10 feet.
