COLUMBUS — It wasn’t the state championship Macy Urig was looking for, but the Vermilion senior was in her usual good spirits Saturday after finishing third in the pole vault at the Division II state track and field meet at Ohio State.
Urig cleared 11 feet, 10 inches which left her behind champion Erin Bogard, a senior at Vincent Warren (12-2) and Orrville senior Karlie Lax (11-10). The tiebreaker between Lax and Urig came at 11-6 with Urig losing out because she needed two attempts and Lax just one.
“I was gunning for No. 1 but sometimes the chips fall how they fall,” Urig said.
Urig was perfect in her first tries at 10-10 and 11-2 before single misses at 11-6 and 11-10.
“I started off very slow today,” said Urig, who had a miss each at 10-0 and 10-6. “I was a little nervous, but when we started to jump I started warming up. Everything started to come into place.”
