Down to the wire in pole vaulting

The line of competition was drawn at 12 feet, six inches, and for nearly an hour it became the dramatic focus of the annual Eunice High Bobcat Relays.

Beau Chene High pole vaulter Storm Robin and Opelousas Catholic’s Ian Miguez, dueled until just past dusk Friday, with the winner decided by fewer misses.

Miguez. who cleared 14 feet at last week’s Crowley High meet, said he felt pushed somewhat by Robin, who set a personal during the event.

“I brought a shorter pole (to Eunice) than I usually use, so it was too small to go any higher. I thought (Robin) was able to push me a little bit,” said Miguez.

Robin finished his meet satisfied with the result.

“I did what I came here to do and that was achieving a personal best. The best I’ve done before (Friday) was 12 feet. I’ve been working on this event and today some of the small things kept me from going a little higher,” Robin said.

Miguez said he has been training with his cousin, OC pole vaulter Amy Stelly, who won the girls’ division with her 11 foot clearance.

Stelly, who finished third in the Division II indoor meet last month at LSU, concluded the Bobcat Relays with misses at 11-6.

Miguez said he and Stelly train in New Iberia and the pole vault has become an endearing event for him.

“One day my aunt suggested that I try the pole vault. I tried out and I ended up liking it. It’s different, so I’ve come to like it,” Miguez said.

Stelly and field competitor Mia Manzanares helped the Vikings finish second in the girls’ competition (104 points), behind Notre Dame (112).

Manzanares also helped the Vikings’ effort.

Following the meet, Manzanares was selected the outstanding female field performer after she won the javelin (118-1), finished second in the shot put (29-2 ¼) and third in the triple jump (32-2).

The OC boys, aided by 20 points from middle and long distance runner Blake Aucoin, were seventh (47).

OC coach Dane Charpentier said he has been trying to improve the school’s track program, mainly through numbers.

“I’ve been working hard at getting more kids out for track and we’re working hard at it,” said Charpentier.

Aucoin was triumphant in the 1600 meters (8:34.04) and the 3200 (19:08.21).

Eunice High’s Cole Prudhomme was the meet’s outstanding male field performer.

Prudhomme won the shot put (52-11 ½) and was the runner up in the discus (118-5) behind Port Barre’s Dylan Taylor (124-3).

Beau Chene’s Charlie Milton was the outstanding male track performer.

Milton won the 300-yard hurdles (40.69). Milton added another eight points in the 110 hurdles (15.81). Milton was also a key figure on two of the Gators’ relay events.

The Port Barre and Eunice girls each won a pair of events.

Port Barre’s Rona Hardy won the 100 meters (12.78). The Devils also won the 400-meters relay (52.88).

Eunice’s girls claimed wins in the 800 and 1600 meters relays
