ECS grad Drew McMichael earns First-Team All-American status, wins national title with Texas Tech

It almost didn’t seem real for Drew McMichael two weeks ago at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

On June 5, the Texas Tech senior capped his career with an eighth-place finish and First-Team All-American status in the toughest pole vault field the meet has ever seen. Two days later, the Evangelical Christian product watched as teammate Duke Kicinski won the discus to clinch the meet for the Red Raiders in Austin, Texas.

At that moment, the idea that he was a part of a national championship team crept into McMichael’s mind. But it wasn’t until the Fort Myers native walked onto the infield and cradled Tech’s first national championship trophy in any men’s sport that the idea became reality.

“It’s not something you can really put into words,” McMichael said. “It’s really just a feeling.”
