Expectations vary across county

For some state is a surprise. For others getting to La Crosse for the state tournament is the expectation.

At the end of the year, personal improvement is the main goal for all track and field athletes.

By the time the season ends, some athletes are pleasantly surprised by their improvements and end up at the state meet.

That’s what happened to Fort Atkinson junior Lauren Bilau as a sophomore last year. She qualified for the pole vault and set a goal going into the meet to clear the opening height.

Now her target of getting back to state is more of an expectation than a hope or dream.
