Girls prep of the week: Veronica Champine

• What she did: Champine set a school record by clearing 10 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault last week, beating her own personal best by 9 inches. The mark is also just 7 inches shy of the Marin County record. She also competed in the long jump for the first time since her freshman year — she didn’t compete since then due to shin splints — and finished first with a 15-3 jump.

• What she said: “It’s just been the accumulation of my training since last season. I went to two different pole vault camps. “… I’ve been doing bar work and going to gymnastics classes to get stronger and working on new forms that I didn’t have before that let me jump higher than I have before. “… I was anticipating jumping higher sometime in the season. I definitely wasn’t expecting it at the first meet.”

• What’s next: Champine has over a month to continue working on her form before the MCAL championship meet on May 15. She said she might try a 13-foot pole rather than the 12-foot pole she’s been using to try soar even higher. “I can hold higher (on a 13-foot pole) and get more bend in the pole. My hand is higher so my hips are higher and more bend equals more pop off the top of the pole.”

• Off the field: Champine ran cross country for Terra Linda for three years but admits she just did it mostly to stay in shape. She also plays rec soccer.

• Trivial matter: Champine started doing gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling at the age of 3. “I was a competitive gymnast but that was a long time ago,” Champine said, “But that was what led me to do pole vault because I had the strength and the body (type).”

• Coach Warren Lanier: “She’s just been a consistently hard worker and she’s starting to see the results. She’s an incredibly talented young lady and a team captain. This was really the very beginning of what she’s capable of this season.”
