The top-ranked Grand Valley State women’s track and field team had a strong showing on Friday afternoon at the Bob Eubanks Open inside the Kelly Family Sports Center, hitting nine qualifying marks, including a highlight pole vault performance.
The biggest mark of the day was hit by junior Kristen Hixson (Remus, Mich./Chippewa Hills) in the pole vault, as she cleared a height of 4.09 meters to win the event, the highest height cleared in women’s NCAA Division II so far this year. It was an automatic qualifying mark and keeps Hixson unbeaten in competitions that she has registered a height in dating back to the 2012 GLIAC Indoor Championships nearly a calendar year ago, when she finished second. The 4.09 meter height is the third-best mark she has cleared in her collegiate career, trailing only the 4.16 meter mark she cleared at the GVSU 2nd to Last Chance Meet during last outdoor season and the 4.15 meter height she cleared to win the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship.
