Greenville pole vaulter qualifies for Rio Olympics

Morris finishes second at U.S. Track and Field Trials

EUGENE, Ore. —Greenville’s Sandi Morris punched her ticket for Rio on Sunday after finishing second in the pole vault at the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore.

Morris is widely considered one of the best pole vaulters in the world but her Olympic dreams took a big hit earlier this year when her pole snapped in competition and she was injured in the ensuing fall.

Morris lived in Greenville before attending the University of Arkansas on a track and field scholarship.

Jenn Suhr will get to defend her Olympic gold medal in the pole vault after winning the event at the U.S. Track and Field Trials. Runner-up Sandi Morris and third-place finisher Alexis Weeks also qualified for a spot on the Olympic team in Rio.
