Greenwich High pole vault standout Zavattaro wins New England title

Lia Zavattaro was intrigued when she saw indoor track and field athletes testing their skills in the pole vault event the winter of her freshman year at Greenwich High School.

“I had no idea about what it took to compete in the pole vault,” Zavattaro said. “I had never really heard much about it until high school, but I knew it was unique. It looked interesting and I could tell it took a lot of technique and talent to perform. I said to myself, ‘this is something I want to take up.’ ”

Zavattaro put that thought into action and today, just 21/2 years later, she is a premier high school pole vaulter. Since Zavattaro first competed in the event during the spring of 2015 — her freshman year at Greenwich High — her heights have increased, along with the number of medals she’s garnered.
