AUSTIN – Harmony’s Daven Murphree completed a stellar high school track and field career last Saturday by winning the class 2A pole vault championship at the UIL state track meet held on the campus of the University of Texas.
Murphree cleared 15 feet 3 inches on his first attempt which topped all eight of his state competitors. He attempted to clear 17 feet, but was unsuccessful.
By claiming Saturday’s gold medal, Murphree claimed a three-peat, his third state AA vaulting crown.
He possibly could have won the event his freshman year, but was sidelined by a broken bone injury.
During the spring 2013 track season, Murphree won the New Balance Indoor National Relays in New York.
His best vault came last month at the Texas Relays in Austin, when he had a winning vault of 17 feet 8.5 inches in the high school division.
Murphree is rated the No. 1 scholastic pole vaulter in the nation. He has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, where he plans to continue his vaulting career in the Southland Athletic Conference. He will continue to enter USATF meets this summer before enrolling in SFA in the fall semester.
