CHATHAM, NJ – There is a perception on the Chatham boys track team that pole vaulters Julian de Keyzer and Matt Saluti are “lazy” and aren’t working as hard as the sprinters, hurdlers and distance runners on the team.
“What they work on is very specific to what they have to do in the pole vault,” Chatham coach Patrick Barry said. “To a lot of the boys, it will appear that they’re not doing much and sometimes they’re not. Most of the time they are actually doing what they need to do. Being that you’re putting yourself upside down, pole vaulters are definitely a different breed.”
