CHARLESTON, Ill. — Once was not enough for Marmion’s Andrew Saloga, who set a personal record in the pole vault and then topped it minutes later to take second in the Class 3A state meet.
Saloga was unfazed Saturday by a step up in class after failing to reach the 2A finals the previous two years.
“I woke up an hour before my alarm and thought, ‘Today’s going to be the day,’” Saloga said.
Saloga, a junior, seized it by clearing 15 feet on his first attempt at that height. It topped his previous best of 14-10, a program record set indoors in March at the Illinois Prep Top Times meet.
Saloga then cleared 15-3 on his second attempt. It matched the height of Lake Park junior Zachary Frye, who earned the win because he made the height on his first attempt.
