Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School junior Victoria Toth broke a six-year meet record en route to winning her first Montgomery County Championship pole vault title Wednesday at Northwest.
Toth’s 10-foot leap was six inches higher than the previous meet mark and two feet, six inches higher than her performance from a year ago.
Barons coach Chad Young said the strength—she can easily do 50 pushups swiftly without pause—and body awareness Toth developed while previously competing in gymnastics helped lay the foundation for her pole-vaulting success.
“[Body awareness] is so important, especially for pole vault,” Young said. “You have to kind of be a little fearless to go that high up over the bar. It’s right up a gymnast’s alley.”
