In February 1942 Merchant Seaman David Magill was lost at sea when his ship Ocean Venture was struck by a torpedo off the coast of North Carolina.

Young David emulated his father’s sporting prowess, competing in decathlon and pentathlon events across Ireland. He excelled in the pole vault and was Irish youth champion in 1954.
