HS boys’ track and field: Farrell’s Joe Crispi takes Bishop Loughlin pole vault

Monsignor Farrell’s Joe Crispi took home meet MVP honors from the Bishop Loughlin Games Saturday by winning the pole vault with a personal-best of 15 feet.

Crispi’s winning vault, which matches the top height in the state this season, capped a day in which he initially struggled with his approach.

“My steps were off,” admitted the 6-foot, 175 pound senior. “I ran from only five lefts because we didn’t have poles big enough for my full approach. Technique was key today.”

Crispi cleared 14-6 on two attempts, then his 15-foot personal best on the third attempt before barely missing three attempts at 15-6.

“Once I got my steps right I really started to jump well,” he added.

Farrell’s Justin Sicari, the state leader and defending meet champion in the high jump wasn’t as lucky, taking second in a jump-off after clearing 6-4. Eamon Dwyer of St. Peter’s Prep won it at 6-6.

“I had really good attempts; amazing attempts. There were two jumps that I felt that I was way over the bar,” said Sicari. “I should have had it today but I had fun and I’m really looking forward to trying again next week.”

Staten Island cross country champion Mohamed Aziz of MSIT got off to a good start in his indoor debut, taking fourth in the mile in 4 minutes, 27.29 seconds, a three second personal best.

St. Peter’s sophomore sprint medley took home gold with a time of 3:54.78. Dennis Farley (2:08.7), Justin Muccio (25.8), Jamari Alexis (25.2) and Deven Markase 54.5 completed the squad. Curtis was the runner-up in 3:57.85.Warriors’ sprinter Joshua Beausil reset the school sophomore 300 meter dash record, running 36.24 seconds, besting Russell Harris’ time of 36.60 set in 2003.
