ow high can Hutchison’s Mary Carson Pitts go? The sky’s the limit.
Pitts, the Sting’s star senior, turned in the Most Outstanding Performance of the Houston Invitational track meet on Saturday, breaking her state record in the pole vault. The Tulane signee, who set the mark with a vault of 12-3 several days ago, surpassed that by clearing 12-4.
She then topped 12-6 and cleared 12-7 before calling it a day. Pitts has the four highest girls vaults in state history. The boys winner at the Houston meet only cleared 12-2.
“Today was fun; I’m really tired now,” she said. “This meet last year I actually had mono and that was not the best. I also had really bad shin splints.
“This year I’m healthier; I’m not sick right now. It’s gonna be a good season. By the end of this season I’d really love to go 13, 13-6. We’ll see; I have to get some bigger poles.”
Pitts’ performance was just one of many highlights at the meet, particularly on the girls side.
