Idaho State head track and field coach Hillary Merkley has added three assistants to the track and field program’s coaching staff.
Joining the Bengal staff is Mike McPhearson, who will work with vertical jumps and gymnastics; Cody Fonnesbeck, who will serve as the throws coach; and Yuriy Litvinski, who will coach horizontal jumps and sprints. Nate Houle remains as the program’s assistant track and field and cross country coach.
“We are excited to have Mike, Yuri and Cody join our program,” Merkley said. “Their expertise will be an asset to the student-athletes in our program.”
McPhearson attended Utah Valley University where he competed as a decathlete. He was a two-time all-American in the heptathlon (12th) and decathlon (16th). He also competed in the USA championships in 2013 where he placed fifth in the heptathlon. McPhearson has experience as a gymnastics coach and has been coaching the pole vault and multi-events at the Air Force Academy. McPhearson coached Cale Simmons, an Olympic pole vault qualifier.
