SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior John Prader and freshman Laura Hollander have garnered conference awards based on their performances at this past week’s Big West Conference Track and Field Championships it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Prader was awarded Big West Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year while Hollander was named the Big West Conference Female Freshman of the Year.
Prader won the award when he won the conference championship, set a personal-best mark and set a Cal Poly school record.
The senior won the Big West Conference Championship when he cleared 17-feet, 7.25-inches. At the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara dual meet on April 27, Prader cleared the height of 18-feet, 7.25-inches, which broke Sean Brown’s previous program standard of 18-feet, 6.75-inches set in 1997.
Prader, the 2012 Big West Conference champion in the men’s pole vault, cleared 18-feet, 0.5-inches at the Cal Poly/SLOShare.com Invitational on March 16.
Prader is currently ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 3 in the nation.
Hollander won the 5000 meter run at the Big West Championships in a meet record time of 16:25.62.
At the Mt. SAC Relays in the Olympic Development Elite Division on April 19, the true freshman placed third in the 5000m with a time of 15:53.73. At the time it set a new Big West Conference record and was just three and a half seconds off Amy Harper’s 1983 Cal Poly school record of 15:50.40.
She also ran a 4:25.87 in the 1500m at the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara dual meet.
She is currently ranked 10th in the West Region and 20th in the nation.
Other award winners included: Men’s Coach of the Year, Andy Sythe (LBSU), Women’s Coach of the Year, Drew Wartenburg (UCD), Male Track Athlete of the Year, Carl Horsley (CSUN), Female Track Athlete of the Year, Ashley Marshall (UCD), Female Field Athlete of the Year, Samantha Balentine (UH), Male Freshman of the Year, Willie Alexander (LBSU).
