The Illinois men’s track and field squad completed the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday (June 5). True freshman Cody Johnston earned All-America honors in the pole vault with his clearance of 5.52m (18-1 1/4) to take fifth place. This makes him the first Illinois freshman ever to earn All-American status in the pole vault and score at the national meet in the event.

Senior Tyler Sudduth earned his first outdoor All-America honors in the shot put with a throw of 19.67m (64-6 1/2) to take seventh place. He becomes the fifth Illini man to score in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the first one this century to earn All-American status. The last Illini male shot putter to stand on the podium was Jeff Teach in 1995 who also placed seventh.
