A pole vault stand, pit and runway sit conspicuously against a rustic backdrop in a sprawling yard on 10th Street in Hobart.
“The story hasn’t changed,” Jim Johnston Jr. said.
Indeed it hasn’t. For years, a less elaborate setup stood on the adjoining property, owned, cleared and built by Johnston’s father Jim, a state and national champion and long-time Brickies track coach. For decades, his yard was a grueling training and conditioning site for many a vaulter, not just from Hobart but throughout Northwest Indiana.
