Muscle Memory:

Pole vaulting may appear complex and expensive, but when broken down, it’s a sport that relies heavily on technical motions that can be replicated through budget-friendly drills. Muscle memory plays a crucial role in becoming a successful vaulter, allowing athletes to reproduce movements without conscious thought. It involves not only the muscles but also the brain and nervous system pathways.

Doing specific drills targeting different aspects of the vault is vital as muscle memory can help retain strength and movement even after a period of training cessation. Recent studies reveal that the brain uses the time between repetitions to memorize skills, and short breaks can lead to rapid mental replay of the learned actions. Understanding the science of muscle memory empowers vaulters to optimize their training, focusing on correct techniques and allowing for adequate pauses to enhance learning and performance. By harnessing this knowledge, athletes and coaches can build a solid foundation for progression and overcome potential setbacks caused by incorrect muscle memory. By Abbey Hope

Pole vault Speed, by Doug Bouma:

Speed is a crucial element in the sport of pole vaulting, playing a significant role in achieving high vaults. A vaulter’s speed on the runway helps generate the necessary momentum to clear the bar and transfer energy to the pole. It also aids in maintaining balance and control during the approach and overcoming the resistance of the pole itself.

Improving speed requires a combination of proper technique, strength training, and cardiovascular conditioning. Sprinting mechanics, plyometric exercises, strength training, and cardiovascular conditioning all contribute to enhancing speed and acceleration. By focusing on these aspects, vaulters can maximize their potential for successful and high jumps in pole vaulting.
