Keene High alum and Indiana Wesleyan University freshmanScott Rathbun lifted himself up to a third-place finish in the men’s pole vault at the NAIA Championships Saturday at Gulf Shores, Ala.

On his third and final chance, Rathbun cleared a personal best five meters (16 feet, 4.75 inches). He was unable to clear the next height of 5.05 meters (16 feet, 6.75 inches), and finished behind runner-up Jordan Downs — a senior at Bethel University — and national champion Corey Sledge — a sophomore at Eastern Oregon.
Rathbun — a two-time Division I and Meet of Champions title winner and one-time New England runner-up during his time with the Blackbirds — had to overcome a big physical setback to get to his latest accomplishment. Six months ago, he fractured his T1 vertebrae during practice, leaving him in a neck brace and unable to practice for 10 weeks.
