Kemp soars, sets national meet pole vault record

GREENVILLE — Landon Kemp continues to fly through the air. Each time, she raises the bar…literally.

Kemp, who set the Greenville High School pole vault record multiple times a year ago, set another record on March 13, this time at the New Balance Nationals Indoor competition in New York City.

Competing in the Emerging Elite event, Kemp and Fruitport’s Gabriella LeRoux both vaulted a meet record 12-foot-4 3/4. Kemp, without any misses through the first four height attempts, won the championship over LaRoux.

The previous record of 12-4 was set by Virginia’s Hannah Meador in March 2012.

“Going into it, I was just trying to do my best. With basketball season, it was really hard to get down and practice,” Kemp said. “I think I was the most relaxed I’ve been since it was the third time I was there. I knew my surroundings and just wanted to go out and have fun.”

After clearing 12-4 3/4, Kemp attempted 12-8. She came close, but couldn’t clear that mark in three attempts.

“My standards were just a little bit off,” Kemp said. “So if they would have been in a little farther, I think I would have gotten it.”

The sophomore, who earned O-K Bronze second team honors during the basketball season, was able to practice just one day a week (on Sundays) during the winter months, while most of her competition was practicing a few days a week.

Kemp set the Greenville record for a third time last year at the Division 1 state meet in May with a vault of 12-0. That was good for a third place finish as a freshman. She also placed fourth at the state meet in the long jump with 17-9 1/2.

At the season-opening high school meet at Grand Valley State University on Thursday, Kemp tied her school record of 12-0. Her season goal is even higher.

“I was really close to 12-6 at Grand Valley on Thursday,” Kemp said. “I’m hoping to get 12-6 this season and maybe even a little higher than.”

Kemp also competes in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in addition to the long jump and pole vault.

“I’m excited for the season,” Kemp said. “I’m excited to do hurdles again this year and long jump.”

The Yellow Jackets are at Aquinas College today. Start time is 4 p.m.
