NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Another record-setting performance by Ole Miss track & field juniorSam Kendricks highlighted a strong night of performances by the 16th-ranked Rebel men and the Rebel women at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Kendricks won the pole vault with a facility-record 18-2.75, defeating the next closest vaulter by 10 inches. The Oxford, Miss., native has now set a meet record in each of the last three competitions and a facility record in both venues at which he has vaulted this season.
Only four NCAA pole vaulters have cleared 18 feet at least once this year, and Kendricks has done it three times. Dating back to the 2013 outdoor season, he has gone over 18 feet in 10 of his last 12 collegiate competitions.
Ole Miss dominated the men’s weight throw, with Nathan Loe, Marcus Franklin and Onyi Afoaku placing 2-3-4. Loe posted a personal-best 61-11 heave, and Franklin set a PR with a toss of 60-7.25. Both throwers join Afoaku in the top five in the school record books.
Competing unattached, senior Ricky Robertson posted a huge high jump of 7-6.5 to defeat a good group of competitors. It was his personal indoor best, a half inch better than his own school record of 7-6, and ranks him fifth in the world this indoor season. Robertson has already exhausted his four years of indoor eligibility and will compete in his fourth outdoor season for the Rebels this spring.
On the women’s side, junior Kierra White leaped a season-best 20-0.25 to place second in the long jump. That jump moves her up to eighth-best in school history and 20th in the NCAA this indoor season.
Senior Kayleigh Skinner and freshman Mary Alex England both ran personal bests in the 5,000 meters at 17:26.13 and 17:31.17 to move into fourth and sixth place in school history, respectively.
Day two of the Invitational begins with running events at 10:30 a.m., followed by field events at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
