Kiwi pole vaulter Eliza McCartney awaiting scan as Achilles problem hits buildup

Eliza McCartney’s athletics world championships buildup has hit a speed bump.

The Kiwi Olympic bronze medallist in the pole vault has been battling a right Achilles tendon problem in her European buildup campaign, and is to have a scan on the injury to determine the extent of the problem.

Coach Jeremy McColl is optimistic it will not prove serious enough to compromise her first world championships, being held in London in August.

“I’m pretty sure it’s not a rupture or a tear … potentially it’s just an inflamed tendon,” McColl told Radio Sport from their training base in Germany.
