Kristen Hixson led a group of three Grand Valley State University student-athletes on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II Women’s Track/Cross Country First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Hixson, with a 3.96 grade point average in finance, earned the highest honor, being named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for Division II Women’s Track/Cross Country.
Joining her on the Academic All-America First Team were teammates Lisa Galasso and Monica Kinney.
Hixson, a first team Capital One Academic All-America Division II Women’s Track/Cross Country selection for the second time, has been a part of four NCAA Division II National Championship teams at Grand Valley State. A native of Remus, Mich., she won the indoor and outdoor national championships in the pole vault in 2012 and has been a six-time All-American in the event.
Hixson was the national runner-up in the pole vault during the 2013 indoor season and finished in third during the outdoor season. She has finished no worse than fourth in each of her six possible appearances at the national meet and has finished first or second at every GLIAC Championship meet, including championships at the 2011 and 2012 outdoor championships.
Along with Academic All-American of the Year Kristen Hixson, Galasso and Kinney give Grand Valley State a total of three student-athletes on the Capital One Academic All-America(r) Division II Women’s Track/Cross Country first team.
Galasso, a biomedical science major with a minor in chemistry and a 3.97 G.P.A., is a four-time indoor All-American and was a 2011 outdoor All-American. She helped the distance medley relay team win a 2012 indoor national title and has qualified for NCAA Division II National Championships eight times in three different events. She has been part of four NCAA Division II National Championship teams. The Orion, Mich. native is a three-time GLIAC individual champion.
Kinney is a nursing major with a 3.76 G.P.A. who was the individual national champion at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the mile and 5,000 meters. A native of Walker, Mich., she has been a part of six NCAA Division II National Championship Laker teams. She is a nine-time All-American earning six indoor honors and three outdoor honors. She is a five-time indoor GLIAC champion and was the 2011 GLIAC outdoor champion in the 1500 meters.
