COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following Academy record-setting performances in the pole vault, senior Kyle Pater and sophomore Kathryn Tomczak were honored by the Mountain West this afternoon (Feb. 7), as they swept the conference’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week awards. It is the second time this season that Air Force has claimed the men’s and women’s Field awards in the same week.
Pater was named the MW Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, after posting a career-best clearance of 18’4½” (5.60m) to break the Academy record in the pole vault at the Air Force Team Challenge on Feb. 3. That height, a personal improvement by four inches, is the second-best clearance in Mountain West history. Bettering the previous program standard (and meet record) by nearly two inches, Pater won the pole vault by nearly a foot and helped Air Force to a perfect 3-0 record in the meet. The first vaulter in the NCAA to reach the 5.60-meter mark this season, Pater is currently ranked first in the conference and second in the nation.
