Lafayette’s Mondo Duplantis, Byrd’s Kyah Loyd win Louisiana Gatorade track awards

Lafayette High’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis and Kyah Loyd of Shreveport’s C.E. Byrd were selected as Louisiana’s Gatorade Track & Field Athletes of the Year, according to a news release.

Duplantis is a junior who enjoyed unprecedented, record-setting success for a high school competitor in the pole vault. With a clearance of 19 feet, 4¼ inches at the Texas Relays this spring, Duplantis shattered the national high school record by nearly a foot.

The jump also set a World Junior (Under-20) record and represented the highest clearance in the world in 2017 — regardless of age — at the time of his selection. Duplantis has now cleared 18 feet six times outdoors — twice as many as any other prep competitor.
