Lafayette’s Mondo Duplantis remains grounded while soaring to historic pole vault heights

Armand Duplantis remembers a few things about his first track meet. His most vivid memory isn’t about clearing 5 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault at age 6, but about the reward.

“They had a handicap in the meet based on your personal best and my personal best was zero because I’d never had a meet before,” Duplantis said. “I won the handicap, obviously, and they had this pot of money for the winner of the handicap. So I go right up to a guy running the meet and ask him where my money is.”
