Lasting legacy: Late pole vault coach still inspires Rams

The pole vault competitions at Saturday’s Bedford Giant Eagle Track and Field Invitational were named after late Richland pole vault coach Larry Layton, who passed away in December.

It seemed poetic somehow that both the boys’ and girls’ competitions on Saturday were won by Rams athletes who had worked with Layton throughout their vaulting careers.

Senior Morgan Gossard cleared a meet record and tied a personal best with a vault of 12 feet to capture the girls title, while senior Bryan Abel sailed 13 feet for the boys crown.
