Ledford Breaks Pole Vault Record at Red Flash Open

Moon Township, Pa. – In its final tuneup before the 2014 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center, the Robert Morris University women’s track & field squad had a limited number of participants take part in the Red Flash Open Saturday in Loretto, Pa.

Junior Bethany Ledford (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) highlighted the meet for the Colonials, establishing a new school record in the pole vault with a leap of 3.70 meters (12’1.50″), which also helped her take home the individual title in the event.

In other field events for RMU, junior Chartice Wyatt (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown) garnered bronze in the triple jump thanks to a final distance of 10.16 meters (33’3.75″).

In the track events, sophomore Brittany Shay (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) finished second in the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 2:23.56. Shay was one of a trio of Colonials to finish in the top five in the event, as freshmen Amanda Choma (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) and Adau Deng (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Choma crossed the finish line with a time of 2:28.94, while Deng completed the race in 2:39.93.

For the second time in program history Robert Morris will host the NEC Outdoor Championships, which take place Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island in Pittsburgh, Pa.
