Lenzey Stidham from Siena Heights University won the women’s pole vault competition Thursday afternoon after she cleared the 3.85-meter mark.
Stidham went on to fail three subsequent attempts at a 4-meter vault as onlookers clapped in unison during her final try. The junior said she was pleased to have won the competition but hoped to outperform herself when she returns a year from now.
“I want 13-plus next year, at least,” said Stidham, admitting that she could practice listening to her coach’s advice and spend more time lifting weights to clear a vault of 13 or even 14 feet.
Stidham beat out seniors Morgan Bradford from Clarke, Katie Breuer from Mount Marty, Ferin Barry from Azusa Pacific and 11 other underclassmen.
In 2000, Lesa Kubistha set the current NAIA women’s pole vault record at 4.16 meters (13.65 feet).
