The last time Tim Werner attempted to pole vault was at a master’s meet in Dana Point, Calif.
In addition to the normal three tries at a height, contestants could put $10 in a hat for an additional attempt.
Werner recalls friends putting a lot of bills in the hat before he was able to clear 9 feet and call it a day.
“My knees can’t take it,” the 63-year-old Werner said.
