(RENO, Nev.) – Los Gatos High senior Greta Wagner figured out the best way to fly free to New York is to soar through Reno, Nevada.
Wagner took full advantage of a special sponsorship opportunity by winning the High School Division of the Pole Vault Summit in Reno on Saturday, earning her a free airline ticket and entry into the famed Millrose Games in The Big Apple in mid-February.
Wagner matched her lifetime best clearance of 13-02.0 on her first attempt at that height on Saturday, tying Nevada’s Alexis Romero for the divisional win.
Meet promoters announced beforehand that the winner of the girls division only — sorry, guys — would earn “the right and  the flight” to go to Millrose. When Wagner and Romero finished in a statistical tie, promoters decided to honor their commitment by awarding the prize to both athletes.
On the boys side, Tamalpais’ August Kiles led the California contigent at the vault-only competition, soaring 16-02.00 to place sixth in the championship flight.
Nearly 1,200 competitors from Masters to Beginners level descended in Reno for the highly popular annual event, which included all-day teaching clinics on Friday and all-day competition on Saturday. An elite portion competition of global stars also was featured on Friday night.
