Colorado Mesa’s Nolan Ellis finished first in the pole vault on Thursday, setting the top mark so far in Division II.

Ellis posted a winning height of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic in Golden to highlight the efforts of the Mavericks on the first day of the two-day indoor track and field meet. The Mesa junior surpassed his previous-best vault of 16-4 3/4 from the Mavericks’ season opener on Dec. 1.
