Thanks to a rival’s religious convictions, University of Louisville pole vaulter Gabriela Leon is close to qualifying for next month’s World Athletics Championships.
Though Leon was initially designated as an alternate for the world meet by finishing fourth in last week’s USA Track and Field Championships, second-place finisher Alina McDonald has announced her intention to skip the competition because the women’s pole vault finals are scheduled for a Sunday, July 17.
