McGovern Wins Pole Vault at USATF East Region Open

NEW YORK On Saturday afternoon, recent Manhattan College graduate Brian McGovern (Yonkers, N.Y.) won the men’s pole vault at the USATF East Region Open Championships at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.  McGovern’s winning leap was 5.30 meters (17 feet, 4½ inches).

McGovern, who set the Jaspers’ school record of 5.36 m (17’7) on March 22, then had three good attempts at 5.40 m (17’8½), but was unable to clear the height.

He has been selected to represent Ireland at next weekend’s European Team Championships 1st League in Dublin.  The men’s pole vault competition will take place on Sunday, June 23.  McGovern is also the Irish national record-holder.
