Miles Begins Olympic Competition Wednesday

South Dakota track and field assistant coach Derek Miles will compete in the pole vault preliminaries at the 2012 Summer Olympics on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 4 a.m. Central time in London, England.

According to the USATF Web site, the qualifying rounds for the men’s pole vault, the men’s 5,000 meters and the women’s 800 are scheduled to be shown at 9:30 a.m. CT on Wednesday morning on NBC. Check local listings for affiliates in your area.

If Miles qualifies for the finals, they will be held on Friday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. Central time in London.  Depending on heights cleared in the prelims, the top 12-14 advance to Friday’s finals.

Miles is competing at the Olympics for a third time in his storied pole vaulting career. He finished seventh at the Summer Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004, and was fourth at the Summer Games in Beijing, China, in 2008.

Miles, 39, was a five-time All-American in the pole vault at USD. He graduated from USD in 1996 and was inducted into the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
