MONROE CITY, Mo. (WGEM) — Monroe City’s two-time defending state champion pole vaulter became the latest in a string of area NCAA Division I commits on Friday morning.

Chase Pennewell signed his national letter of intent with the University of Kansas track and field program.

Pennewell says he’s ready for what the next level has to offer.

“I think it will be good. It will push me. They’ve got a lot of really vaulters in their program. Every day will be really competitive to try and make it to the top and make it to the national level,” Pennewell said.

“I think it came down to when I made my visits the atmosphere that fit me the best and that’s what I ended up going with.”

Pennewell says the decision wasn’t an easy one but one that he’s very comfortable with.

Next spring he will look to end his Monroe City career as a three-time state champ in Class 2 pole vault.
