National title for Sheffield pole-vaulter

Abigail Roberts (City of Sheffield and Dearne AC) added another title to her impressive list when she won the under 20 pole vault at the English Championships at Bedford at the weekend.

Her event, on the first day, was held in poor, wet conditions but she still managed to clear 3.90, 15 centimetres better than her nearest rival.

In the men’s event her Sheffield team mate Adam Hague suffered a rare defeat. Well below his best at 4.90, he finished in third place.

There was a silver medal for Sheffield’s Haran Dunderdale in the 3000 metres steeplechase, narrowly beaten by Declan McManus (Worcester) with the rest well back. Dunderdale clocked 9:06.3.

City of Sheffield sprinter Kristie Edwards was fifth in both the 100 metres (11.42) and 200 (24.55).

Rotherham’s Lee Thompson narrowly missed a medal when he finished fourth in the under 20 400 metres in a time of 49.30 whilst Holly Rogers, also from Rotherham, was fifth in the under 20 women’s hammer with 47.65.

There were a limited number of events for under 18 athletes.

Alicia Barrett (Chesterfield) won the 100 hurdles (13.12), Leo Rowley (Rotherham) was second in the shot (15.74) and Toni Buckingham (Barnsley AC) was third in the under 18 women’s shot with 13.98.
