DES MOINES, Iowa—South Dakota sophomore pole vaulters Chris Nilsen and Makiah Hunt put together a pair of top performances at the 109th Drake Relays on Friday at Drake Stadium.
Nilsen placed second in Drake’s elite pole vault for the second-straight season to 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist Sam Kendricks. Nilsen used a third-attempt make to vault 18 feet, 11 ½ inches, for the highest mark by a collegian in Drake Relays history. The height is seven inches higher than his mark from last year. The sophomore was the only collegian in the field and topped several Olympians in the competition.
