DES MOINES, Iowa — University of South Dakota standout Chris Nilsen completed a stellar sophomore season with a runner-up finish in the men’s pole vault at the USA Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
After needing a second attempt to clear opening height (17-10 1/2), Nilson cleared the next five bars on the first attempt, including 19-0 1/4. After missing on his first attempt at 19-2 1/4, Nilsen passed his final two attempts as Sam Kendricks cleared the bar on his first try. Both failed to clear 19-4 1/4, leaving Kendricks as the champion.
