Noorth Central College junior Luke Winder has the skill and talent to win just about every time he heads to the pole vault pit.
When he’s pushed, however, that’s when records fall.
“The three best performances he had this year, two of those he had people right up in his business,” said his dad and coach, Tim Winder. “We’re supposed to focus on the technical aspects all the time; however, you can have a competitive response when people are trying to get what you want. That’s a positive thing.”
In winning his sixth consecutive NCAA Division III national title and third outdoor, Winder was pushed by Andrew Barnett of Johns Hopkins over Memorial Day weekend. Not only did Winder become the first vaulter — male or female — in NCAA Division III to win six combined national titles, he set the outdoor championship record in the process.
