Northeast Ohio’s only other boys champion was Midpark senior pole vaulter Aaron Owens, who was Midpark’s first — and last — boys track state champion. He won the pole vault (16-0) after a harrowing experience at 15-6. He had a run-through attempt and a miss. On his third and last attempt, he stopped short with less than 30 seconds of jump time remaining. He hurried back, took a deep breath and cleared the height easily.
“Everything has to be perfect if you want to be a champion,” said Owens, who was second last year. “It didn’t feel right, so I shut it down early, cleared my head and said, ‘Now or never.'”
