Oxford’s Kendricks reaches pole vault final

Sam Kendricks, the former Oxford High and Ole Miss standout, has reached the finals of the pole vault at the world championships in London.

Kendricks, 24, needed three tries on Sunday to clear 18 feet 4.5 inches but later cleared 18-8.25 to reach Tuesday’s finals.

Six of the eight eventual finalists struggled to make the opening height.

“We were all too fast for our poles in the beginning and had to adjust,” he said. “Great jumpers make great jumps and we all had to pull it out of the bag today. Hopefully we’ll have something left for Tuesday.”
