Paige Sommers, a senior at Westlake High in California, won the women’s elite section Saturday after clearing 12-7.50 (3.85m) in a jumpoff at the Vaulter Club Vaulter Magazine Big Red Barn Fall Fest meet in Sun City, Calif. Sommers cleared 12-3.75 (3.75m) on her first attempt, then missed four opportunities at 12-9.50 (3.90m), before making 12-7.50 on her first try in the jumpoff to edge Gabrielle Pack of Peninsula High. Sommers, the California state and national junior class record holder at 14-6 (4.42m) was vaulting from only six strides instead of seven and using a 14-foot, 150 pole in her first competition in 16 weeks.
