Pelham high school wins five medals at provincials

Don’t number Maryann Mergl among the people who think 13 is unlucky.

Thirteen E.L. Crossley students competed at the Ontario high school track and field championships in Oshawa with four of them combining to win five medals. Shyla Cardy, a gold medallist in the midget girls high jump last year, topped the junior girls field this time out, Tyler Grummett won silver in the midget boys pole vault and bronze in the high jump, Regan Glen claimed silver in the junior girls pole vault and Cassie Osterlund finished third in Ontario in the midget girls pole vault.

Their success, and fifth-, ninth-, 10th-, 13th, 14th- and 17th-place finishes, helped Crossley finish 14th overall of the 243 high schools that competed at the three-day event.

Mergl, a Crossley teacher and a track and field coach for the past 20 years, said she can’t remember winning five medals at one provincial championship.
